Indonesian Tourist Visa

In the past the citizens of 48 countries were permitted to stay in Indonesia for up to 60 days without needing a visa. This policy now only applies to the nationals of 11 countries – Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – and for a period of only 30 days, as long as they have a passport that is valid for 6 months or more. Further, this visa free facility cannot be converted into any other type of visa nor can it be extended.

The citizens of Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Hungry, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Maldives, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, and the United States need to pay for a ‘visa on arrival’. This can be purchased upon arrival at an international port or airport in Indonesia (Initially this is only available at Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Portugal, Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali and Manado airports, and at the Batam, Bintan, Medan, Sumatra, Padang – Sumatra, Padang Bai–Bali, and Jayapura– Papua seaports ) as long as applicants hold a current passport that is valid for 6 months or more. This must be presented along with an airline disembarkation card. If requested, proof may also be required that an applicant has the means to live while in Indonesia.

Those individuals not on the visa–free list of countries or on the visa–on–arrival list must apply for a visa overseas before arrival in Indonesia.

A 3 day ‘visa on arrival’ costs US$ 10, while a 30–day ‘visa on arrival’ costs US$ 25.

Those visitors who overstay this visa on arrival can leave Indonesia by paying US$ 20 for every day they overstay their 30–day visa. Further, airlines that have their flights delayed for any reason can have their passengers exempted from paying any overstaying penalties.

Indonesian Retirement Visa

Foreigners over the age of 55 years, of independent means, in good health, of good character, and who do not intend to work in Indonesia are allowed to retire in Indonesia on an ‘extended temporary basis’. Initially accepted applicants can stay for 1 year, thereafter visas may be extended every year for 5 years. After this probation period applicants may apply for a permanent stay permit (KITAP).

Supporting documents required for application:

  • Copy of passport and/or travel documents that are valid for 1 year
  • Proof of retirement income – e.g. bank statement, pension documents
  • Health and life insurance certificates
  • Curriculum vitae, with photos (10 4x6, 4 3x4, 4 2x3 with red background)
  • Employment letter – affidavit stating you will employ at least one Indonesian to assist you while you live in Indonesia.
  • Personal guarantee letter – to live and stay in the agreed place in Indonesia. The mentioned place must be in an authorized tourist area and in accordance with the prevailing regulations.
  • The spouse of a retirement visa applicant may apply for a limited stay permit visa. A copy of their marriage certificate must accompany their application.

Note – If you need to go overseas during the time you hold this visa you need to ensure that your limited stay permit visa is still valid when you apply for the necessary exit and re–entry permits. A single exit–re–entry permit is valid for 3 months, while a multiple exit–re–entry permit is valid for 6 months.

Indonesian Business Visa

This visa is intended for those foreigners doing business in Indonesia but who are not locally employed. It is valid for a 12 month period.

An applicant must have a sponsoring local company and both sponsors and applicants must submit the following information:

All documents are sent to Jakarta. If approved (usually within 4–5 days) applicants are sent a telex visa that they need to take to an Indonesian consulate or embassy outside of Indonesia – along with a processing fee. (Embassies and consulates set their own fees depending or currency fluctuations and local business rates). Once a visa proper has been provided, applicants must return immediately to Indonesia and in return are eligible to stay in Indonesia for 60 days, extendable each month (through immigration) for a period of between 6 and 12 months.

Indonesian Working Visa (KITAS)

This visa is valid for one year. A local sponsoring company is also required. If the recipient of a working visa wishes to go overseas during this period they must apply and pay for exit and re–entry visas (there are several types) and must pay fiscal tax of 1.000.000 Rupiah at the airport when they leave Indonesia.

An applicant can then apply for a real visa at an Indonesian embassy or consulate (outside of Indonesia). A processing fee is additionally charged here. The length of time this takes and the fee charged varies from country to country. Further, if an applicant is already the holder of an Indonesian visa fiscal tax of Rp. 1.000.000,– must be paid before an applicant can leave this country. When a real visa is issued the applicant must return to Indonesia and report to Indonesian immigration within 7 days of arrival. Immigration will then provide applicants with a KITAS (limited stay permit), a Blue Book (from immigration), a Yellow Book and STM (certificate and report certificate from the police), and a working permit (IKTA). This process can take up to one month.
